Eye Hospital in Tirur for Retina, Cataract and Glaucoma Care
Sampada VR Speciality Eye Care is a surgeon-led eye hospital on Railway Station Bypass Road, Thazhepalam, a few minutes from Tirur railway station. It is the first centre in the Malabar region dedicated to vitreoretinal disease, with cataract, glaucoma and routine eye care under the same roof.
A retina-first eye hospital in the heart of Tirur
Most eye hospitals are built around spectacles and cataract lists. Sampada VR was built around the retina: the thin, light-sensing layer at the back of the eye where diabetic damage, detachment and macular disease begin. If you have been told you need a retina specialist, you can be seen and treated in Tirur.
Every retinal case is examined by Dr Sameera V V, a fellowship-trained vitreoretinal surgeon with 14 years of experience, and she explains the plan in plain language before anything is done. Cataract, glaucoma, dry eye and general eye check-ups are handled in the same building, so a family can be seen together.
- Retinal imaging and diagnostics: OCT scanning, fundus photography and Humphrey visual field testing on site.
- Retinal laser: green laser for retinal photocoagulation, used in diabetic retinopathy and to seal retinal tears.
- Surgery as day care: most procedures are completed the same day, with a follow-up plan and a number to call.
- All ages: a calm, unhurried setting for elderly patients, children and premature babies.

Do not wait for eye problems to get worse
Many serious eye diseases cause no pain in the early stages. A dilated examination finds them while treatment still works well.
Book an examination if you notice
- Blurred, dim or distorted vision, or straight lines that look wavy.
- New floaters, or spots drifting across your vision.
- Difficulty seeing at night, or a shrinking side (peripheral) field of view.
- Frequent headaches or eye strain, or a change in your spectacle power.
- A child who squints, sits very close to screens, or does not track objects.
Get checked on a schedule if you
- Have diabetes: an annual dilated retinal exam, even if your vision is fine. See diabetic retinopathy treatment.
- Are over 40: a baseline check that includes eye pressure, which is how glaucoma is caught early.
- Have a family history of glaucoma, retinal detachment or macular degeneration.

Do you perform cataract surgery in Tirur?
Yes. Cataract surgery is done here as a day-care procedure: the clouded lens is replaced with a clear artificial one and you go home the same day. Having a retina surgeon in the same centre is an advantage if you also have diabetes or another retinal condition that needs to be assessed before surgery.
Do you treat glaucoma and do routine eye check-ups?
Yes. We offer glaucoma care, including visual field testing with a Humphrey Field Analyzer, and complete dilated eye check-ups for adults and children, along with dry-eye treatment, squint (strabismus) care, vision therapy, myopia control and a low vision clinic.
What should I do in an eye emergency?
A sudden curtain or shadow across your vision, a shower of new floaters, flashes of light, or a sudden drop in vision can mean a retinal detachment, where the hours matter. Call +91 91885 72412 straight away and come in. If the clinic is closed when symptoms begin, go to the nearest hospital emergency department without waiting for our next opening.
Do I need an appointment?
Booking ahead saves you waiting time. Call +91 91885 72412 or message us on WhatsApp. Walk-ins are also welcome during opening hours.
Do you treat children and premature babies?
Yes. We screen premature babies for retinopathy of prematurity (ROP), a condition that can cause blindness if it is missed, and we care for children with squint and refractive problems. The centre is designed to be calm for elderly patients and young children alike.
